How to pass your driving test first time in Brighton
Mena Bushara · 20 September 2026 · 8 min read
Roughly half of tests in this country end in a pass. The half that do not are rarely failed by people who cannot drive — they are failed by people who could drive, on a day that went wrong.
Book the right slot
Avoid the first test of the morning if you are not a morning person, and avoid anything that puts you on the road at school run time. Mid-morning on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday is the sweet spot.
Have your lesson immediately before
Not the day before. Immediately before. An hour of driving before the test puts you in the car warm, and lets you get the nervous mistakes out of your system on someone else's time.
The five faults we see most
- Not checking mirrors before signalling. Mirror, then signal, then manoeuvre — in that order, every time.
- Coasting downhill. Brighton is a hill. Stay in gear.
- Stopping too far back at junctions, then creeping. Creeping reads as hesitation.
- Missing a speed limit change. The city is full of 20s that become 30s and back again.
- Over-cautious roundabout entry. Refusing three safe gaps is a fault, and an easy one to pick up under pressure.
On the day
Bring both parts of your licence — or the photocard, if that is all you have. Bring your glasses if you need them for the number plate test. Eat something.
And this matters: the examiner wants you to pass. They are not hunting. If you make a mistake, drive on. Candidates fail tests in the four minutes after a mistake far more often than they fail because of the mistake itself.
